We were watching TV and Merilee had just woken up from her nap. I was cuddling her on the couch and noticed that Cara was not in the room. I called her name and then asked Merilee if she knew where Cara was. We checked the kitchen and when Cara was not in Merilee's room, I thought, "Oh no, she's in the bathroom!" Sure enough I ran to the farthest point in our house, which Cara can get to in about 30 seconds. I found her in my bathroom eating rat poison. I swabbed her mouth and got about 5 bits out and emptied her handfull while calling to Justin to call poison control. They told us to go the the E.R. and they would call ahead for us. At the E.R. they took her vitals and then gave her 2 doses of charcoal to help absorb the poison. They drew blood and eventually gave her the remaining 3 doses of charcoal. Cara acted fine the whole time. She acted like the charcoal was her dinner and fussed for more. The nurses and doctor were amazed that she ate it so well. The nurse came and put a "pee bag" on her to collect a urine sample to make sure there was no blood in her urine. Then we were discharged and came home.
Since then, Cara has spit up quite a bit of "inky" stuff and had a thick, black poop, like meconium. The spit up was super hard to get off the furniture and has stained her clothes. I was prepared with the clothes, but forgot that it would get on the floor and...everything else. Justin was wise and suggested that we "de-cutesify" her bed, just in case the spit up and poop get everywhere while she sleeps.
I had Justin take the "pee bag" back to the hospital in the pouring rain. It only had a couple drops but I didn't want her to have to wear it all night (very uncomfortable). Since the specimen was probably not sufficient I put on another bag that we brought home after Cara took her bath. We had a lot of "oil" to wash out of her hair (if you know what I mean). I guess I put the bag on better and was able to collect quite a bit more that I am saving in the fridge until tomorrow when I will run it up to the hospital. We have to go in on Wednesday for another blood test and if all is normal then she will be free to go, but if her levels have gone up then she will have to be seen every 2 days for the next month. He PT count (no idea what that is) is .946 and as long as it is under 1 it is okay, but if it goes up, then an unsafe amount of poison is in her system. In the mean time, I have to watch for bleeding and bruising.
That is as much as I know right now. I will keep things updated. In her blessing that Justin gave her, he felt she would be fine. I am optimistic as well and have a feeling she will check out just fine on Wednesday!!
