Cara's Surgery Day

Cara has been seeing a Dr. at the Hough Ear Institute in OKC for her hearing and chronic ear infections. He decided she needed new tubes and her adenoids removed. He pulled out one of her old tubes with a "crochet" hook thingy and vacuumed out the other one. Here is Cara in the waiting room at Foundations Surgery Center. She was actually very excited for the procedure!
When we got to the pre-op room, she got a little nervous and wouldn't sit in the chair. The blood pressure check worried her and she didn't want to change out of her warm pajamas. They gave her a cute gown and socks with the no-slip grippers on them. Here we were just waiting out turn to go back to surgery.

She was going to need an IV for this surgery but they wait until they have given them "gas" before they put it in. I really appreciated that because she was not traumatized at all.

Cuddling and waiting.

They actually started her procedure right on time. We were scheduled for 8:20 and I left for the waiting room at 8:23!! It was freezing in the waiting room so I basically paced for an hour until they said I could go to recovery to meet Cara.

She was really bothered by the idea of the IV in her hand, but otherwise she was perfect. When I first saw her she was still in the wheely bed and the nurse picked her up and handed her to me. The nurse was so sweet and kept saying how all the nurses talked about what an angel Cara was. She was the sweetest patient and just kept smiling. The nurse had asked her if she was this sweet all the time and Cara just looked up at her and groggily said "uh, huh." She had everyone really fooled! Actually, she was surprisingly good. She never cried or fussed. She got a little nervous again when they took the IV out but that was it. She had an itchy nose and face (she kept rubbing her face into my shoulder while she recovered). She never got sick to her stomach or complained of pain once we got home. Later, when we had to put drops in her ears she cried because she said it burned. She is great now though and I hope to see improvement in her hearing as we start preschool at home!
