Some people look forward to the Arts Festival at this time of year, but out here in Western Oklahoma, all the talk is on the Rattlesnake festival. It is basically an extremely small version of the fair but instead of animals there are snakes. This was our second time going and we invited my brother, Jakob, and Babushka and Grandad. Jakob was a good sport and helped a lot with the kids. Grandad treated the kids to some rides. We are so lucky to have such great family members around. It was a real treat to have them come see us instead of the other way around.
This was the TINY "restaurant" that served rattlesnake. Everyone except Babushka tried it. Holland was chowing down for the first few bites and then didn't want anymore. Merilee nibbled a bit, mainly on the fried breading. Cara ate the breading dipped in Tabasco sauce. That girl likes things spicy. And then Justin ate every edible part on the snake segment which was pretty small. It was just part of the experience!
Holland and I after tasting the snake.
The kids got to ride three rides. The girls did an airplane ride and Holland was hysterical because he wanted to ride too. So, Grandad got some more tickets but we had a hard time finding a ride for someone Holland's size. Finally there was a train ride and then the Merry-Go-Round. I had to argue with the ride conductor that Cara was tall enough to ride by herself. I told him that she was tall enough at Disneyland and he said, "This ain't Disneyland!" So after he measured her and discovered that I was right, he let her ride. I was just thinking, I know how tall she is because we were just at the Health Department that week!
Anyway, it was fun. After we got our fill of snakes, we drove out to Quartz Mountain (our favorite place to hike) to show the rest of the family. They were pretty "walked out". So we had our picnic and then headed home. We had plenty of sun, me especially. I got a good sunburn on my shoulders and back that Cara so graciously peeled at for me today. Jakob had to get home but Babushka and Grandad were staying the night so we went out to Denny's for the kids-eat-free-night. Time with family always goes WAY too fast but we look forward to seeing them again for Mother's Day.
